bullet restart numbering is disabled

I'm working on an outlined document, using heading styles for indented
numbering (heading 3-6). For some reason, I reached a point where, under a
new heading 4, my heading 5 forces a continuation of the previous numbers
(starting on "G" instead of "A").

When I go to Format | Bullets & Numbering, the "restart numbering" or
"continue previous list" is disabled, so it doesn't let me change it. I've
tried restyling, copying from another list, changing the style back and
forth, but whenever I get back to heading 5, it goes back to "G". Any help?

(Why did they make Office 2003 such a pain? Rhetorical question.)

Your Heading 5 numbering is either not set to restart after Heading 4 or,
more likely, it is using a separate numbering scheme.

The first shot should be to reset the paragraph style (Ctrl-Q) just in case
it is a local difficulty (numbering applied as direct formatting) but it
sounds like you have probably tried that. So now you need modify *Heading 1*
(not Heading 5) and set up the complete numbering hierarchy including
linking each level to the appropriate style and setting the restart
conditions. Full instructions at:
