Bullet size different though it is same font and size

N

Nathan

My resume is all Times New Roman and basically the same font size. I use
bullet lists in 5 different sections, all the same font and size.

In one section, the bullets ar just a little larger (and the spacing of that
section just looks different) than the other bulleted sections, even though
it is exactly the same font and size as all the other bulleted sections. I
checked that the section was not being "bolded".

Any idea why I can't get that one section of bullets to match the oter 4
sections of bullets?

Hi Nathan:

The short answer is "Because it is a different bulleted list."

If you use styles to apply your bullets, and define your bullets as part of
your style, then you won't get this problem.

Since you haven't, you need to select each bulleted list and use
Format>Bullets and Numbering to make sure that the same "sample" in the
dialog is applied to each.

The size of the bullet can be set by the font, paragraph, style, or list
formatting applied to the paragraph marker in each item of a bulleted list.
(Read that carefully, several times! This is a bit confusing :))

Allow me to give you a hint: Use at least two fonts for your resume! One
for the headings, and one for the text. If you want the job, neither of
them should be Times New Roman :)

Most resumes are read on-screen these days, and serif fonts do not look nice
on screen.

Cheers

I kind of see what you mean though I don't really understand how word uses
these "Style" groupings throughout the program. I guess if you do a lot of
word processing and like to keep batches of setting at the ready, that's
what its for. Unfortunately, there is no way to give a separate title to
each kind of Bullet "style" you create. I played with this a bit before I
came to the news group and my formatting palette has 5 different Bullet
styles that look alike in the dropdown list - you can't give them differen
style names.

Anyway, using Format>Bullets and Numbering dropdown, I tried to come up with
a combination of a bullet font(Symbol), size and style to then apply to all
my bulleted lists. I couldn't get a consistent application.

Also, in a couple of my lists, the spacing is fine but one of the actual
round "bullets" is slightly different from the other bullets. And this is
after I try to apply one of the various bullet styles to the list I created
to just see if I can get that particular list to have the same bullet size!!

I'm obviously missing something. Any other tips? What else specifically
affects how a bulleted list looks. You mentioned something about paragraph
formatting (I looked at that and I think I'm pretty consistent on that but
who knows), and also list formatting(you mean the Format>Bullet+Numbering
dropdown, right?).

One weird thing is that one "paragraph" of 7 bulleted items, which looks
good and I'd like to emulate, does not even activate the "Bullets and
Numbering" dropdown in the formatting Pallette I keep open on my screen as a
shortcut. Weird. Why would that happen?

Any articles on bullets that may apply to my sitch that I can read? Thank
you for the help.

Hello Nathan,

If you want to keep it simple and don't want to use Word's styles to solve
your problem, you should consider avoiding Word's bulleting monstrosity
altogether.

Just key Option-8 to produce a bullet in the font you're using. Don't use
Symbol font.

[The above assumes you have deliberately landed in this discussion group for
users of Mac versions of Word (if not, it's not your fault: misdirecting PC
users here is a charming foible of Microsoft's web interface). It's my
understanding that bullets can't be keyed in PC versions of Word. For future
reference, here's where all the Office discussion groups are listed:

Hi Nathan:

The styles I meant are "Paragraph styles". You customise one of the
built-in ones to your taste (say: "List Bullet" style). Then you include
the bullet formatting you want (which can include font, character, size,
colour...) as part of that style.

Click "Add to template" during your customisation and it will be stored in
your Normal template so you can use it in any other document you like.

See here for more:
