I am using Word 2003. I followed Shauna Kelly's instructions
(http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/bullets/controlbullets.html) to create a set
of "outline numbered" list bullet styles in my template. Two weeks ago the
bulleted lists started showing apparently random bulleted or numbered formats
in various documents that use the template. (The documents automatically
update their styles from the template.) For example, in one document, all the
bullets kept the correct indentations but were sequentially numbered. In
another they remained bullets but were all indented at 2" instead of at 0",
0.25", 0.5"...
I noticed that the List Gallery position had changed. I had defined this set
of styles using the upper right position of the Outline Numbered tab. When I
put the cursor in a bulleted paragraph and opened the Bullets and Numbering
dialog, the lower right position was highlighted. The bullet format in the
document followed the lower right position, which somehow had gotten various
non-numbered (or numbered) styles associated with its levels, and these
associated styles varied from document to document.
I decided the template had somehow been corrupted, and I recreated it. I
first deleted Normal.dot and then immediately set to work on the template. I
used nothing from the old template. (Well, I did import my macros, which have
nothing to do with autonumbering.)
The template includes the outline-numbered bullets. It also contains one
other customized "numbered" style, named Note. I defined Note using the lower
right position of the Numbered tab in the dialog. Perhaps I selected that
position. If so, that may have been my fatal error.
Today the List Bullet styles have somehow associated themselves with the
lower right positon in the list gallery. (If I put the cursor in a bulleted
paragraph and choose Format > Bullets and Numbering, the lower right position
is highlighted.)
At the moment all the documents look OK. At the moment the upper right and
lower right positions of the Outline Numbered list gallery are identical to
each other, at least on my computer. I do not expect this situation to
persist.
What do I need to do to prevent the bullets (or maybe the notes) from
getting messed up again?
Thanks in advance for your help!
