Bullets and Numbering Won't format

I am trying to do an outline in Microsoft Word 2004. Previously, I
was able to type in "1." and the computer would automatically format
it according to the computer's automatic tab settings. When I pressed
return, a "2." would appear and so on. Then, when I wanted to be able
to create a subpoint, I would just tab in and the computer would
automatically insert "a." Another return and tab in and I'd get "i."
But now, all of a sudden, it's stopped doing that--when I tab in,
nothing happens. Any thoughts? My computer is all up to date and I
haven't touched any of the autocorrect settings. Oh, and I am working
on a PowerBook G4.

Thanks!

Check the Word Help topic " Organize a document by using outline view".

Your first paragraph must be a Heading 1 style, and the Heading styles must
have Outline Numbering applied.

Cheers

Make sure Word | Preferences | Edit has "tab and backspace set left
indent" checked (as well as "automatic numbered lists" under Tools |
AutoCorrect | AutoFormat As You Type).
