Bullets and Numbers

We use Windows 2000 and the boss is using Microsoft Office 2003.

When the boss creates an outline numbered list it doesn't automatically put
in the next number when he hits return. It will put in the next number if
he types in an extra character and hits return in front of that character,
like so:

1. Charlie eats apples.[return]
no new number appears

1. Charlie eats apples.x {then backspace and return}
2. x

Why does it do that and is there a way to change it?

Is he definitely inserting a paragraph return rather than a linefeed? Turn
of the ShowAll command to see the non-printing characters and make sure that
the end of line is a pilcro (looks like a reversed P) and not a line feed (a
right-angle arrow).

You can turn auto numbering on in Word 2003 as described below by going to
Tools, AutoCorrect options... Click on the "Autoformat as you type" tab and
ensure there is a checkmark in the box for "Automatic Numbered Lists".

Hope this helps.
