bullets and symbols?

R

Ray

I am surprised that there are no posts about a problem I've had since
the first day with Office2004: Bullets, instead of being appropriate
little black circles, are usually varying sizes of open rectangles.
Indeed, insert symbol inserts similarly place-holder-like objects
instead of what they should be. Ideas? ...would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Because you didn't allow Word to install its Wingdings fonts? And other
fonts that are essential? m.

Thanks, but I ..don't think so.I went back to the install CD. There is
no particular installation for Office2004 for fonts, like in previous
times. Rather, it's a drag of the app folder (which contains all of
the fonts in subdirectories) or the use of the installer. But, if the
latter, it does not have any extra optional font installation choices.
Once installed, the directory structure, including the Wingding font
packages is there, and identical to OfficeX. So, I think it's
something else that's messed up?

Okay. So assuming it isn't a problem finding the fonts... What happens
if you quit Word, move aside your Normal template, and then start up
Word again? Does that fix it? Here the theory I'm going for is that the
"bullets gallery" in your Normal template is busted. m.

You need to rename your Normal template (to something like OldNormal) so
Word doesn't recognize it and creates a new Normal when you launch Word
again. Moving it aside I assume Matt means to the desktop isn't
recommended. For more, see
<http://word.mvps.org/MacWordNew/MacWordNormal.htm>
(If you're using Safari, you may have to hit Reload once or twice.)

OK, Beth, I have to ask - what on earth difference could this make? Word
isn't magically going to notice the Normal on the desktop. m.

I said it isn't recommended, not that it won't work :). It's Microsoft
that doesn't recommend it (although they *do* recommend dragging prefs files
to the desktop, which is another issue).

Having more than one Normal in these circumstances could lead to confusion.
If you have customizations in your original Normal and drag it to the
desktop, and then find that the new Normal clears up whatever problem you
had, what happens when you go to transfer customizations from (original)
Normal to (new) Normal via Organizer? Maybe you could keep them straight,
but I'd just as soon not have to worry about it myself, especially
considering that you can transfer from left to right *and/or* right to left
in Organizer.

Ah. Well, I did mean to move Normal to the desktop. If this clears up
the problem and you want to rescue stuff in the old Normal, then sure,
rename it so you can tell it apart from the new Normal (and store it
somewhere just in case there's something in there that you fail to
rescue, such as keyboard customizations). m.

I am sure this has been posted by others before but I just don't have
the time ro read through all posts.

Then people will probably just not have time to read your post past that
sentence.

You can always search the archives for whatever problem you have:

http://groups.google.com/advanced_group_search?q=group:*mac.office*

It takes anywhere from 3 to 10 hours for a post to show up in Google
Groups, but there are few really new problems...

Also note that when posting a new topic (if you were), you shouldn't
start it in a reply.

FIXED. I called MS support. A very nice person from India told me to
put the symbol font from the HARD DISK/Library/fonts/ onto the desktop
and the bullets then worked. It is an incompatibility between MS word
and a font that has been a part of the apple OS since 1984. He refused
to agree that it was a bug, but that the supported fonts for MS word
now just doesn't include the apple symbol font. incredible.

Wow. This is really bad. I knew there were incompatibilities with the
Symbol font, but I didn't know things were as bad as this. Many thanks
for reporting back. m.

Keyboard customizations can't be transferred via the Organizer, BTW, Matt.

In the interests of brevity and lack of ambiguity, I think Beth's advice
holds good. And so does backing up! ;-)

Cheers,
