bullets going everywhere

Hi
In Word 2000, EVERY document that I try to put a bullet
into, the bullets go on every line, including the headers
& footers. When someone else edits the same document it
is fine.
Is there an option somewhere in my version of Word that I
have to set?
I've looked at the automatically update option - as per
previous emails on this subject, but none of my styles are
set with this option.
