I realize that there are about 20 questions out there just like this one.
And yes, I have read every one of them. Here's what I have deciphered from
all of them:
Level 3 is the culprit. All of the problems seem to happen at level 3.
Shauna Kelly has a great link to instructions. I've followed them,
refollowed them, refollowed them again. They're very good. My Word just
isn't listening.
Suzanne Barnhill suggests following Shauna's great instructions and
troubleshooting by clearing and starting over. I've done that a couple times.
Shauna Kelly wants people to make sure they are starting in a Heading 1
paragraph before changing items. I've done that each time.
People report being driven almost insane with this renumbering stuff. I
heartily agree. I'm very good at Word, but it's starting to make me want to
chant "Word Perfect" under my breath for its reveal codes feature.
I'm trying to format the following outline and this is what I am getting:
(Levels 1 and 2 have been omitted here.)
3.5 An apparatus inventory and rig check ...
5.3.1 Whenever possible...
Now, it looks to me as if the heading numbers are reversed (the 5 and 3
should be reversed). I don't know why it is doing this.
I had luck one time by cutting the text, pasting it into Notepad, taking out
the formatting and putting it back in the Word document. As I said, it
worked once, then Word caught on and hasn't let me do that successfully
again.
I have faithfully followed all the instructions given by Shauna Kelly. I
have made sure I'm on a Heading 1 paragraph, that the levels are linked
properly, that the restart numbering is proper, and that each level is
referencing the proper previous level and I've started over completely from
the resetting all the heading styles at least twice. I've followed all the
hints given by Suzanne Barnhill. NOTHING is making this change. I am so
close, but so far...
ANYONE have any new suggestions on how to make this work?
