Bullets in Styles

Anybody have a good reference for learning how to set up bullets in styles? I
do not want the style to be a bullet itself, but how to define a bullet so
that when used within a paragraph it's custom to the way I want it.

That would be the approach I would take; I don't ever apply bullets or
numbering as direct formatting but always create as many levels of
bulleted/numbered styles as required.
