Bullets not sticking in Word 2002

I have Word 2002. I have a template with several styles to create bulletted
text, with various degrees of indent. I am having some issues with the
bullets not "sticking". After creating a .doc file from the .dot file when
I close the file and reopen I find that the style name is correct and all
the correct style definition is there, but one of two things may have
happened; the bullet has disappeared completely, or the correct bullet is
displayed, but the degree of indent has changed to none. As info, ALL
styles are based on "No Style". Any ideas?

Does pressing Ctrl+Q solve the problem? Obviously, that's not a complete
solution, but at least it's a fix.

I don't know how much it would help, but I would recommend that you set up
your bulleted styles as an outline list, as detailed in
http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/numbering/OutlineNumbering.html. This allows
you to link specific styles to specific numbering/bullets and may make your
formatting more stable.

Thanks for the suggestions. I think I've got your drift, but I think that
is what I'm doing now. All my bulleted styles include specific font
styles/points/bullet symbols/degrees of indent, etc. I try to leave nothing
left to Word to decide what the text should look like or format as! I'll
try Ctrl+Q (reset paragraph) but I'm such an idealist I want to know WHY
Word does this. If it's me I can educate myself. If it's Word, I'll give
up!!!!

It's not enough to define a style and apply a bullet format; you really need
to link that style to that bullet format through the Outline Numbered
dialog.

I'll
try Ctrl+Q (reset paragraph) but I'm such an idealist I want to know WHY
Word does this.

Just in a general sort of way, the behavior sounds like what might happen if
the WordPerfect options are active, or if bullets and numbering were turned
off for the paragraphs. The one thing that makes me think of is that the
styles may be updating in the document from the template? (As in the checkbox
in Tools/Templates and Addins being activated.)

The only other thing that comes to mind would be a damaged document (or
template).
