Bullets & Numbering issues in Print Layout view and Notebok view

Processor: intel

The tab and delete buttons will properly set the left indent in NOTEBOOK LAYOUT view so that the bullets and numbering are promoted or demoted using those buttons, but it will NOT do this in PRINT LAYOUT view. Is there anyway I can make it so that the tab and delete buttons set the left indent in PRINT LAY OUT view?

I DO have the box checked for Tab and Backspace Set Left Indent.

Also, I just realized that if I have started an outline with bullets or numbering, the only way to demote a line in Print Layout view (or any other view that is NOT Notebook) is to press Enter again. The backspace button will NOT demote the bullets or numbering. Only the Enter button will. What's going on?

The backspace button in Notebook view WILL demote a bullet or numbering.

Promoting and demoting in a bulleted or numbered list required that the list
be of type "Outline".

In Word 2004, Word used to coerce a single-level list into an outline list.
This broke a lot of lists, so they fixed that in Word 2008.

You need to define a List Style of type Outline, then associate up to nine
paragraph styles with it. Once the list has multiple levels, Promote and
Demote will work correctly.

Come back if you need more than this....

Word employs separate Styles for Bullets & for Numbering which you are
probably invoking by way of the conveniently located buttons. Neither of
those Styles are designed to include multiple levels, so there is no
"promotion" or "demotion".

To have multi-level bullets & numbering in Page Layout you need to apply
*Outline Numbering* from Format> Bullets & Numbering. Once you select your
list & apply that - using whichever of the Styles you wish - the keystrokes
will work as you expect.

Notebook Layout documents are a completely different document structure from
regular documents & one of the many differences is that they employ the
multi-level - or Outline Numbered - Style by default.

Sorry guys, but your advice did not work.

1) Hello
a)Hello
i)

If I want the i) to be demoted to be b) I have to press ENTER. If I press the DELETE button it only erases the i) and does NOT continue the lettering to b) like I want it to be. It just deletes the i) and now there's a blank line.

I have made sure that I am using the OUTLINE NUMBERED format, but this is making no difference. How can I just use the DELETE button to demote the i) to be a b) ?

Also, I have made sure that I have turned ON "Tab and Backspace set left indent" in Preferences. I am using MS OFFICE 2008.

Thanks for the help.

The use of the term "indent" is a bit misleading:) Even though there is
*indentation* involved in a multi-level list you're not looking to change
the indentation, you're looking to change the *level* of the item (which
includes the appropriate indentation).

If you want to Promote use Tab
If you want to Demote use Shift+Tab

OK, you are going to get an "Only partly works" condition here, because you
are not attaching styles to the Outline Numbered List Style.

What you want to do to the "I" level is "Promote" it, not "Demote" it. Use
Shift + Tab for that.

The Delete button will not promote (or demote) a list item. It REMOVES the
list formatting from the paragraph, on its first press, and removes the
paragraph, on the second press. I really hate that, but it was an
"improvement" added a few versions back.

However, to make this stable and reliable, you need to understand List
Styles and their relationship to Paragraph Styles. You also need to
understand Paragraph Styles, they "Based On" property, and their "Style for
Following Paragraph" property.

I am not sure that you want to go into the mechanism in this amount of
depth? If you do, post back and I will talk you through it all.
