Bullets/Numbering Problem

(Running 2000-Pro, SP-4, IE-6, classic mode. Wood 2000.)

Opened a document today and discovered that the numbers had
all become bullets. Repeated clicking on "number" and
"bullet" in various combinations failed to restore the
numbering option with the number button.

Last week I believe I downloaded some MS updates to Word
2000. Has anyone else noticed this problem? Maybe it is
something on my own computer. I note that if I open a new
document things seem to work just fine.

Curious, confused, and hoping for some insight.

Thanks.

Note that when you click the Number (Bullet) button what you get is the most
recently applied numbering (bullet) format. To get control over numbering,
you will have to set it up with paragraph styles. For single-level
numbering, the easiest approach is to apply the List Number style to text;
you can modify the style as needed.

On the other hand, if you are dealing with outline numbering, see
http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/numbering/OutlineNumbering.html.

Also, make sure that the "Update document styles" option in Tools |
Templates and Add-Ins is *cleared*; that way, you make sure that style
definitions in the attached template do not overwrite style definitions in
your document.
