Bullets on text where they shouldn't be

I have had this happen before and I can't remember the way
to avoid the problem. I sent a document to a client and
they tell me there are bullets on text that should not be
bulletted.

I use styles for all the text and bullets. (Actual
customized styles the way they are supposed to be done...)

Is the problem that when they open the document, their
normal template is messed up and putting in the extra
bullets?

I don't know for sure if they are on a later version of
Word than I am. (I am using Word 2000 on Windows 98se.)
We have sent dozens of files back and forth and this
hasn't happened.

Also, if they haven't done all the updates, could it cause
this problem. Or, is it because they are using Windows XP
AND a later version of Word?

Changes to bulleting on different machines aren't uncommon, but using styles
should normally solve that and anyway bullets appearing out of nowhere is
more of a surprise. I'd suspect 'update styles', but can think of a couple
of less likely scenarios that might just invoke this. My suggestions:

First, go to Tools > Templates and Add-ins and make sure that you don't have
'Automatically update document styles' checked. If you do, your customized
styles (or styles they are based on) may be getting changed to match the
client's settings, which could be any old rubbish <g>.

Second, make sure that the text you expect to be unbulleted really does use
an unbulleted style (and hasn't just had bullets turned off as direct
formatting).

Thirdly, check the unbulleted style itself - make sure its numbering is set
to 'None' (rather than a customized numbering scheme that has a null bullet)
and also that it is not based on another style which is numbered.
