burning a presentation to CD with music

I have completed a ppt presentation and have included a track from a music CD. It plays fine on my own computer, but when I burned it to disc the music will not play. The music is what makes the presentation. Any idea how to fix the problem?

The way that you have inserted the music requires that the audio CD be
available too, when the presentation is run from your data CD. You'll need
to convert (rip) the tracks on the audio CD to files on your hard drive (put
them in the same working folder as the presentation), assuming that you have
the permission of the copyright holder. Then delete the inserted music and
reinsert it, pointing to the hard disk files. Then, from the working
folder, move the presentation and the music files to the CD.

Music files, except WAVs, are always linked to the presentation and never
embedded, so they must travel with the presentation.

Always burn a "data" CD. It *does* make a difference.

Also, burn the music files to the CD.

Try the CD on a couple of other systems. If the music doesn't play, and
you've confirmed that the volume is turned up and other music CD's play on
the system, let us know and we'll try to get it sorted out.

I put the music and the ppt presentation in the same folder. Then I went
into the ppt presentation and deleted the music. I reinserted movies and
sounds from file, taking the music from the same folder as the presentation
is in and set it up again. When I double click on the presentation, it
works perfectly, but no sound when burned and played on another computer.
The other concern I have is this. I am going to use this presentation on
another computer. If I manage to work this speed bump out, what are the
chances that it will work elsewhere? One other question about burning
(because I have no clue). When I burn this, am I supposed to burn a data or
music CD? Does it make a difference?

Let's back up. Did you read my reply about ripping the tracks to files on
your hard drive and relinking to them, rather than the audio CD? You have
to do that first. The audio CD then can be put on the shelf because
PowerPoint should be playing the copies on your hard drive.

PowerPoint plays the music in the MCI media player, not Windows Media Player
and certainly not in Music Match. On your data CD include the presentation,
the "ripped" copies of the music.

Okay. I did burn a data CD so I did something right. I'm wondering if
this could be the problem.. When burning a CD, it asks what files I would
like to use. I used the folder that contained both music and ppt
presentation. Should I do this another way? When you say, burn the music
files to the CD, are you telling me that I should burn the music track as
well as the folder. Also, does it matter what program plays the music
(windows media player, music match jukebox). Would that set up make a
difference when burning? Sorry for all of the questions. I just hate to
see a good presentation go to waste.

[CRITICAL UPDATE - Anyone using Office 2003 should install the critical
update as soon as possible. From PowerPoint, choose "Help -> Check for
Updates".]
[TOP ISSUE - Are you having difficulty opening presentations in PowerPoint
that you just created (you can save, but not open)? -
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=329820]

Hello,

If you are using PowerPoint 2003, this capability is built into the product
(Package for CD command). This solution bundles the presentation and, by
default, all of it's supporting (linked) files (such as your music file) to
a CD so that when the CD is loaded on to a supported system the
presentation will be opened up automatically in PowerPoint Viewer 2003. The
same feature includes an option to Save to Folder instead of CD so that you
can create a portable, distributable folder which can be moved to another
system, server, etc.

For customers not using PowerPoint 2003 there are a variety manual
workarounds (multiple steps usually starting with using the Pack and Go
feature) and 3rd party workarounds that I will leave to others to suggest.

If you (or anyone else reading this message) think that PowerPoint should
provide additional options for distributing presentations in full fidelity,
don't forget to send your feedback (in YOUR OWN WORDS, please) to Microsoft
at:

http://register.microsoft.com/mswish/suggestion.asp

It's VERY important that, for EACH wish, you describe in detail, WHY it is
important TO YOU that your product suggestion be implemented. A good wish
submssion includes WHAT scenario, work-flow, or end-result is blocked by
not having a specific feature, HOW MUCH time and effort ($$$) is spent
working around a specific limitation of the current product, etc. Remember
that Microsoft receives THOUSANDS of product suggestions every day and we
read each one but, in any given product development cycle, there are ONLY
sufficient resources to address the ones that are MOST IMPORTANT to our
customers so take the extra time to state your case as CLEARLY and
COMPLETELY as possible so that we can FEEL YOUR PAIN.

IMPORTANT: Each submission should be a single suggestion (not a list of
suggestions).

If you are able to save the track to your hard disk then that is "ripping"
it. You can burn a CD, since you say that you have moved your presentation
and the music file to a common folder and then you have deleted the music
track and reinserted the sound by going to Insert > Movies and Sounds >
Sound from File and pointing to the file in the common folder.

When you burn the CD, move the presentation and the music file to the CD.
Burn it as a data CD and use a CD-R disk so that you'll be able to test it
on a couple of other systems.

Okay, I am going to look like a moron but the presentation is worth it.
I'm not quite sure what you mean when you use the term "ripping". I was
able to save the track in "my music". When I play the presentation on my
computer, I am not using the audio CD. I then moved the track to the folder
I created to hold the presentation. From here, I followed your instructions
for linking. Is that "ripping"? If not, could you explain it to me or point
me in the right direction for information on the process. The linking should
be correct now that I have done what you told me to do. I think that I
either haven't gotten the track on the hard drive correctly or the set up to
burn isn't right. By the way, I appreciate the assistance. I know it can't
be easy guiding dummies through a high tech world. Thanks.
