Buttons not there

Does anyone have this problem? When I first launch word, none of the buttons on my toolbars work. They are all "grayed" out. I have to execute some function using the menus on the apple bar, or expand and minimize the window in order to get them to turn on. After that it is fine.

Hey I have an even worse problem. NONE OF MY TOOLBARS ARE WHERE THEY ARE SUPPOSED TO BE! = ( Also, I don't have any of the 'File' 'View' etc tabs. The only one i have is 'word' and a little scroll thing. I have to use shortcuts.

Does anyone at all know how I can get my toolbars back? It is extremely frustrating and confusing!

Thank you.

See that blue jelly-bean button in the top right corner of the window?
That's the "Full Screen" button. Click it, and your toolbars will come
back.

If the toolbars (buttons) are there but inoperative I think your problem
goes a little deeper than John's suggestion will resolve :)

The first thing I'd suggest is that you make sure Office is fully updated
(12.1.1) and that OS X is at 10.4.11, then quit all programs, run Disk
Utility - Repair Disk Permissions & restart your Mac. If that isn't
enough...

Control/Right-Click the problem toolbar & select Reset Toolbar from the
contextual menu. If that doesn't provide a lasting fix there are other
options to be tried, but do the preceding first. Post back with the results.

Followed CyberTaz' suggestions (not a full screen problem), but no change. This is only on the first launch of word. Once they are activated (no longer visible, but inactive) the problem goes away for the entire time I have word open.

I'm not sure what you mean by "(no longer visible, but inactive)", but if
the problem is still there I guess it doesn't make much difference :)

Can you try running Word from a different (or new) user account? If it still
behaves the same we we'll have a better idea how to proceed.

Yes, they do. My suggestions were for the other poster in the thread.

Which goes to underline your point about people not jumping in on other
people's threads :)

We have two different problems in this thread. The one whose buttons are
not there at all is easy.

The one with greyed out buttons is a different problem: I have no idea about
that one :)

Cheers

Yeah, but "no name" also indicated that his/her *menus* were missing too :)

IF that individual would be so kind as to submit a new message with the
necessary details someone may be able to help... As it is, we don't even
know for sure if they're using a Mac.

I feel so stupid asking this, but on Word 12.1.1 upon opening a new document (or even an older one) I have no scrollbar, and am forced to go through a document with the up and down arrows. Am I missing something here?

Hi Jan -

Should be simple enough :) Go to Word> Preferences> View & tick the box(es)
for Horizontal and/or Vertical Scrollbar.

Any other suggestions than trying to add a new user account. I only have one account on my mac and don't want to have the hassle of some other name. If it is the only way to proceed, so be it. But if there is another option I would rather go that way.

Thanks,
Josh

Hi Josh -

Creating a new user account is no big deal & it's one of the only ways to
determine whether the account you've been using may be the source of the
problem. The new one can always be removed with a click or two.

Made new account. Exact same problem. If it helps, the endnote toolbar still is operational at start up.

OK, we'll have to go a bit deeper ‹ but before we do:

Have you tried other programs (Office & others) to see if there is a similar
problem elsewhere?

Also, try the steps at these 2 links to test your Normal.dotm template &
Preferences files. Since the problem exists in both user accounts I doubt
that those are the problem but it won't hurt to try. Do the Normal test
first & see what happens. Then do the Prefs test if necessary.

http://word.mvps.org/Mac/DamagedPrefs.html

Do you have any add-ins or other "helpers"/haxies installed?

Are there any other symptoms to mention ‹ Word-related or otherwise?
