When I use the link bar (also in themes which I don't
use) there are a limited number of very ugly styles. I
would like to use buttons that I can create in
Photoshop. I can change the buttons with Modify themes
but they don't take.

How do I use my own gifs or my own text styles?

P.s. I have tried to use downloadable buttons,
backgrounds and bars but find them equally unsatisfying

Please define "don't take".

After you modify a built-in Theme, you have to save it
under a new name, and then apply the new Theme to your
site. Could that be the problem?

Otherwise, it may be that you've simply outgrown Themes.
If so, just create your own rollover buttons using the
Interactive Buttons facility in FP2003, or as described in
this article:
