Buying new laptop, do I need to offload office '07 off old laptop

S

Steve

I have Office Professional '07. I know that it allows for installation on 3
computers. I actually have two questions about this. 1 - I have it on one
of my laptops right now, but the laptop needs to be rebuilt. Office was not
OEM on the computer, so can I put it on again without it using up two
licenses (once for first load second for second load?). 2 - I am also going
to be buying a new laptop and selling one of my other laptops that has '07 on
it. Do I need to offload '07 on the laptop I am selling in order to put it
on the new laptop I am buying?

Thanks for the help!

If you bought Office 2007 Professional then the license doesn't provide for
installation on 3 computers. That only applies to the Home and Student
edition. Typically, the license for a retail version provides for the
installation on a desktop and the owner's laptop or portable device. You
would need to read the EULA to be sure, though

Regarding your other questions, if you are reinstalling Office 2007 on the
laptop that you intend to rebuild then it will use the same license you used
for the original installation. Essentially, all you are doing is
reinstalling the software. If you are selling a laptop with a retail version
of Office 2007 and you want to keep the license then you'll need to
uninstall it prior to selling it in order to install it on your new laptop.

Beth,

Thank you for the help. So are you saying that office pro only allows to be
installed on ONE desktop and ONE laptop? On the back of my box it says
"Licensed for noncommercial use on up to three personal computers." I had
thought that meant I could do 3 desktops and 3 laptops? I must be confused?
Your other answer, answered my question though, thanks.

What it means is that different versions of Office have different
licenses. To see yours, open any Office application, click Help and
type in EULA in the search box if you don't see a link to the EULA
there.

Hi Steve,

If the front of the box also says "Academic" then the Academic edition of
Office 2007 Professional is for noncommercial use as well and can be
installed on three computers.

The Academic editions are different from retail editions, which, as I noted,
a retail edition typically provides for the installation on one desktop
and one portable device. (I forgot about this possibility in my original
reply - sorry! Although....didn't I also note that you need to check your
EULA to be sure? <grin>)

<soapbox> I REALLY wish Microsoft wouldn't make licensing SO confusing!!!
With every version it gets harder and harder to keep it all straight. <sigh>

I have a similar problem. I have an older laptop that I installed Office 07
Professional, Academic version. I recently bought a new laptop, and want to
know how I would go about moving it from one to the other. Do I just
uninstall and install in the new one, or is it more complicated than that?

You will need to re-activate the installation, and may need to call the
provided number if there is a "too many installations" issue.

As long as you didn't buy an OEM copy, yes, that's all there is to it - you
may have to activate by telephone....

As others have said, if it is not an OEM copy, just uninstall it and
reinstall it on the new box. If the box states "Licensed for
noncommercial use on up to three personal computers" that would imply
that you have Office 2007 Home and Student edition. That edition can
be simultaneously installed on three computers of any type, not three
desktops and three laptops. Read the EULA for the exact licensing
details. Academic editions have their own rules.

Here's my issue. I need to have a home desktop computer, and a personal
laptop computer. I can only use one at a time, of course. I need Excel,
Powerpoint, Word, and Outlook, and because of the Outlook requirement, the
"home and student" edition of Office 2007 doesn't suffice - the "small
business" edition comes closest to meeting my requirements.

Do I really need to buy TWO Office Small Business licenses to have a copy of
the software on both my personal desktop and my personal laptop? If so,
that's cost prohibitive, and I'll be forced to stick with Windows XP on one
of the machines, since I have Office 2003 license for that.

Thanks in advance,
Bill

I just received my computer back from HP, and they wiped my hard drive.
Since I downloaded Office 2007 over the internet and did not print out the
receipt (STUPID), then I have no office products on my computer now. Help!

I downloaded it from Microsoft... bought online and got a code. I did just
find my receipt with the product key... I guess I was smarter than I thought
I was. Now, I am going to try to download it again and enter my product key.
Here's hoping! :)
