Bypassing Office Update Problems

After installing Office 2003 Standard on my son's laptop
(running Windows XP Home) I ran into the problem noted by
other posters on this list: Office Update identifies and
offers for download necessary updates, but the update
installation wizard fails to install them.

A solution that worked for me is this: use the Office
Update page to identify a needed download, copy or write
down the download's number, then use this number to find
the Microsoft Knowledge Base article that explain its
purpose. The article will include links for a direct
download of the update/patch.

If you are on the Office Online Downloads page
(http://office.microsoft.com/officeupdate/default.aspx)
you can easily get to the Knowledge Base articles by
entering their numbers (for example, KB828041 is the
number for the "Office 2003 Critical Update") in the
Search box at the upper right of this page and clicking
on the green arrow. The window that appears will list
items that contain this number; chances are that the
first one listed will be the Knowledge Base article.
Click on that link; it will take you to the article. The
article will contain one or more links for the download
(look first in the upper right of the Web page).

When you click on the download link you will be asked to
save it somewhere (create a conveniently named folder on
your Desktop if no other location occurs to you). Once
the download is complete you can go to that folder and
click (double-click) on the file name. The file is self-
executing. It will ask if you accept the license
agreement; once you accept and it should install all by
itself.

And how do you make the Office Update Installation Wizard
work instead? I haven't a clue....

Hi:

Thanks for sharing.

Another way that I am using at this time for my second system having auto
update problem is to go to Office Update page, and click Downloads for
Office 2003 under Browse Downloads and go through each category for new
updates.
