Bypassing record

I am trying to solve a problem and hope you can help me. I
have a unique part number which is made up of two fields
in my table. I display it on my users form as 04-xxxxx. It
works great but what has happened is I created a shortcut
for 2 more users (total of 5). They are forced to reenter
a record if someonelse is on that next part number being
automatically generated which I want to happen so there
are no duplicates. They complained if this happens in
quickbooks it tells the user the invoice number was taken
and it gives them the next one without losing information
typed in already. Could anyone please help try to
accomplish this? Is it possible?
