c:\...\Temp folder has 396 MB of files

Hi,

I think this is a general Windows question, but I don't see a Windows
Newsgroup yet. I see a million others in the list (which is not in
alphabetical order and I don't know how to navigate). I guess I sound pretty
inept but I once you take away alphabetical order I'm lost in a list of
hundreds of newsgroups.

Here's my question, anyway:

I have a folder under documents and settings\natelle\Local Settings called
Temp that has 396 MB worth of files. Seems a TAD HIGH for a file containing
temporary files. What is the safe way to clean this file out. I can see it is
full of the files that start with ~ along with folders that contain a date
along with some other numbers. There are hundreds of them--look like they go
back to when I first got this PC. I am concerned that normal cleanup is not
happening on my PC by Windows.

Thanks for any help.

Hi, thanks for the reply. I did post elsewhere and got an answer as to how.
But I replied with this question: is it SAFE to go ahead and delete the
entire contents of "documents and settings\natelle\Local Settings\Temp"? Is
that something you yourself do safely?

Thanks,
Natelle

everything in any temp
file is expendiable.

however, some temp
files are actually in use
by programs and cannot
be deleted conveniently.

but rebooting in safemode
will make any of them
deletable.

the suggestion I wanted
to provide is to make a
simple change to manage
temporary files.

you do this by creating
a main folder on your
c drive called c:\temp

them reassign the paths
for tmp and temp files
to the c:\temp folder.

here are the instruction:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310519

nextly, you can also move
your internet temp folder
to the c:\temp folder as
well.

if you want an easy way
to clear out the internet
temps, create a shortcut
on your desktop and enter
this into location field:

%windir%\system32\RunDll32.exe InetCpl.cpl,ClearMyTracksByProcess 8

similarly, you can create
a shortcut on your desktop
to the c:\temp folder.
