What language is assigned to the Page Number character style? The Header and
Footer paragraph styles?

If you have Word 2002 or 2003, display the Reveal Formatting task pane and
check "Distinguish style source." See what language is displayed for
Language and whether it is coming from the style or from direct formatting.

In Word 2000 or earlier, go to Format | Style and see what language is
specified for the Header, Footer, and/or Page Number styles.

Hi Cindy,

'English U.S. is selected (Highlighted Blue). Also the 'detect language
automatically' is checked.

I have Word 2003. I clicked inside the 'page number' box and did as you told,
I displayed the Reveal Formatting task pane and checked the "Distinguish
style source". There are three categories: 1.Font, 2.Paragraph and
3.Section. Under categry'Font' I see:

From Character Style: Page Number
charater style:
Page Number
Direct Formating
Complex Script Font:
Traditional Arabic

But there is no 'Language' listed under any of the three categories I
mentioned b4!
What is next please?

The fact that you're seeing the Complex Script Font notation suggests that
you may be getting closer to Farsi. I had lost track of what you were trying
to do until I backtracked through the thread (had forgotten that English is
not what you want). You need to disable automatic language detection and set
the language of the entire document (and the header/footer specifically) as
Farsi. If your page numbers are in a frame, they may need to be selected
explicitly. If you can access the Page Number style and change its language,
that would be helpful. See
http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/styles/ModifyAStyle.html for tips on
accessing styles that are not displayed in the Styles and Formatting task
pane.
