Calculating based on references to outline para nos.--!Syntax Erro

A formula I used to use in pleadings for lawyers, no longer works ... in a
document in which it used to work (I think). I can't figure out why it
stopped working. The forumula now returns the helpful message:
!Syntax Error, ‎
If anyone has any suggestions where I could find an answer, I'd appreciate
any tips.

The following is an illustration that will hopefully give you the info you'd
need to guide me. Assume that the paragraph below is using outline
numbering, and that the outline numbering returns the "37" that you see
below. Also assume that the text "[BookmarkName01]" represents a bookmark
that I inserted, and its name is "BookmarkName01"

37. Plaintiff hereby hereby [BookmarkName01]re-alleges and incorporates
herein by herein by reference paragraphs 1 through { = { REF BookmarkName01
\r \h } - 1 } as though fully set forth at length.

I want the formula to return the number 36.

I would very much appreciate any tips indicating what I doing wrong, and
where can I find some explanation of the issues involved.

Thanks in advance for your valuable time.

Your field code syntax works here.

Could it be that the field braces in the “inner†field have not been created
using Ctrl+F9 or that a bookmark with the specified name does not exist? That
would result in the error you see.

Hi Lene. Thanks for trying it for me.
I checked both issues that you raised. The the field braces were created
using Ctrl+F9 and the bookmark name used in the formula is the right name.

I hope the following is okay under the Community rules: To facilitate your
helping me solve this (or find a url where I can learn about it), I uploaded
a sample document, containing an example of the malfunctioning forumla to
this url:

Thanks again for trying. Any suggestions about where to hunt for a solution
would be much appreciated.

Yes, thanks. I replied almost an hour ago. In case you did not receive my
e-mail, you will also find my reply here:

In the document you sent me, the only problem was that the field had not
been updated. Could that be the problem in your original document too (select
the field and press F9)?

Dear Lene:

Thanks again. I do take care to update the field. My guess is that I’m
using some setting in Word that makes the calculations not work. But I can’t
figure out what that setting is. Can you think of any?

Thanks again. Sorry for being so slow.
