Calculating table fields

hi everybody

I am new to access.

I have a database and would like to calculate to table fields

I have a column called price 1 and I have a column called tax


the 3rd column is called Total

How do I get the price1 and the tax calculated in Total

Please tell me step by step because I have no idea how to enter a formula.

Wolfgang

You can't use calculated fields in a table. Create a form for data entry
and then a query to perform the calculation, or this can be done direcly in
the form.

Storing derived data such as this in your table accomplishes
three things: it wastes disk space; it wastes time (almost
any calculation will be MUCH faster than a disk fetch); and
most importantly, it risks data corruption. If one of the
underlying fields is subsequently edited, you will have data
in your table WHICH IS WRONG, and no automatic way to detect
that fact.

Just redo the calculation whenever you need it, either as a
calculated field in a Query or just as you're now doing it -
in the control source of a Form or a Report textbox.

To create the field in a Query, create a new Query based on your
table. Type the expression in a vacant Field cell in the query grid:

Total: [Price1] + [Tax]
