Calculation changing from Automatic to Manual

The calculation option in Excel 2003 keeps switching to Manual. I choose
Automatic and when I reopen Excel, it's back to Manual again. Haven't had
this problem before -- how to do I make it stay at Automatic?

Do you have any macros that might be executed at open time -- either an
event or volatile macro or due to a volatile formula?

I wonder if a macro is setting manual calculation, then failing to set
automatic calculation for any of a number of reasons.

Please clarify "when I reopen Excel".

Do you mean when you start Excel (blank worksheet)? Or do you mean when you
open an Excel workbook?

If the latter, are you opening the file within Excel (clicking on File >
Open), or are you clicking on the file in a folder?

In either case, do you already have another workbook open in Excel?

I'm importing a report from a third party and then running a macro. The
macro has nothing in it about calculation (I created it). But I do usually
run this report first thing in the morning, and I haven't checked the
calculation status before running it, so maybe it is the report that is doing
it. A co-worker has run the report without the calculation status switching,
but she runs it later in the day so she has already opened other files.

Usually, I won't have Excel open when I download the report -- Excel opens
from the report. So tomorrow, I'll try opening another file first and see if
this fixes the problem. I can't do anything about the third party report --
the company charge us if we want something modified, but I could add a line
to my macro to switch to automatic calculation.

Just to add to Don's response.

Remember to look for any files in your XLStart folder--personal.xls was saved in
manual mode????

This fixed it. I was opening the file directly from the source and the
calculation was set to manual. When I opened Excel first and then opened the
file, the calculation was set to automatic. Thanks!
