Calculation issues

Hi all,

I have Leopard and Excel 2008, both with the latest updates offered by Apple and Microsoft.

A few days ago I was copying some formulas and realized that while the formulas were being copied correctly, the number being displayed didn't change. For example:

Cell A1 contains the number 1; B1 contains the number 1; C1 has the formula =A1+B1, and displays the accurate result of 2

Cell A2 contains the number 1, B2 contains the number 2. I copy C1's formula into C2, and the formula bar shows the correct formula - A2+B2, but the result is...2. Again, it shows that it is indeed calculating the correct cells but it's not displaying the correct result.

For what it's worth, if I erase C2 (which shows the formula =A2+B2) and type that same formula in manually, it gives me the correct answer.

Also, I am realizing that if I open old spreadsheets that if I edit a cell which is linked to a formula, the formula doesn't recalculate. So, in the example above, if I opened the spreadsheet and changed cell A1, C1 wouldn't change!

Anyone know anything about this? It's rendering Excel all but useless - please help!

Thanks!
Adam

Odd - I just realized that this impacts only certain workbooks. (It does seem to impact both .xls and .xlsx formats, however).

One more thing I noticed - when I save the workbook, it shows the correct results, though the formula is no longer saved - instead of the formula being saved to my clipboard, the result of the first calculation is saved! So bizarre...

The problem is that you have calculation set to manual. It is correct when
the workbook is saved, because recalculate before save is checked. Go to
Preferences, Calculation and change it to automatic.

Remember that the calculation mode is global for all workbooks, but is set
to the state of the first workbook opened. So if the first workbook is set
to manual, it will remain as manual even if subsequent workbooks are set to
automatic.
