Calculation like Word 5.1

I

Ian Page

Up until recently, I had Word 5.1 menus showing in Word X. With this
selected, I had a fantastic Calculate command under the Tools menu.

As I say - Up Until Recently.
Now, both these commands -

View > Word 5 Menus, and
Tools > Calculate

seem to have disappeared - I may have turned them off, but have no idea how
to turn them on again.
Any thoughts?

Alternatively, anyone know of an add-on that recreates the fabulous Word 5.1
Calculate command?
(i.e. no fields no formulas no tables - just option-drag to select ANY
RECTANGULAR AREA for calculation, hit Command-= , and the result is on your
clipboard AND displayed in the Status Bar!!)

Hi Ian,

I don't know of an add-on to create the functionality you're looking for,
but you should be able to reset your Word 5.1 menu as follows:

Go to Tools>Customize. Select "Word for Macintosh 5.1" and click Reset.
Close and relaunch Word.

If, for some reason that doesn't do it, try testing your Normal template and
Settings files as follows:

1) Quit Word and navigate to your Normal template which should be in
/Applications/Microsoft Office X/Templates/. Rename Normal to something else
(like OldNormal), then relaunch Word. If this fixes the problem but you
have customizations, etc, in OldNormal that you want to maintain, you can
use Organizer to transfer those from OldNormal to the newly-created Normal
template. Then you can trash the old renamed file. To learn how to use
Organizer, see here (use IE not Safari to view this site):
<http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/WordMac/MacWordNormalTemplate.htm>

If this doesn't fix the problem, quit Word again, trash the new Normal and
rename OldNormal back to Normal.

2) To test your Preference files, quit *all* Office Applications.
Navigate to your ~/library/preferences/Microsoft folder. Rename the
Microsoft Component Preferences, Word Settings (10), and Microsoft Office
Settings (10) files. When you restart Word, these files will be recreated.
If all is well, you can trash the old files. You will have to reset some
Preferences and AutoCorrect settings.

If this doesn't help, you can trash the new files and rename the old ones
back.

Hope something here works.

I eventually found the solution myself - posting here for the benefit of
others.

Choose View > Toolbars > Customise... and the click the Commands tab.
In Categories, make sure All Commands is selected.
In Commands, scroll down (a long way) until you get to Tools Calculate -
drag this command to whatever menu you choose - close Customise window.

The superb functionality of this calculate command beats the standard
implementation in Word X hands down - see my original post below for
explanation!
