Calculation Plus Text Within Cell

Terry Lee

Hey, there, MS-Folk. I would like to do a fairly simple
calculation and then add text after the calculation, but I
can't seem to figure out the correct syntax. To keep it
simple, let's say I want something like:

=(F5/7) + grams

F5, of course, is the value in another cell.

What I would see is just "14 grams," without the quotes,
of course, though I might like it to appear as 14g instead.

I know it has something to do with &TEXT, but I just can't
get it right. Any help would be appreciated.

You can use a custom number format to add the "g" or "grams" to the number:

Select the cell
Choose Format>Cells
Select the Number tab
Select the Custom category
In the text box, type: General"g"
or, for one decimal place: 0.0"g"
Click OK

Thanks, Debra & Chuck!!! I appreciate the quick replies.
And it sure is nice to have two different options, two
entirely different approaches. Excel's flexibility just
rocks!

You could also make your text a little more flexable by having your formula
refer to a particular cell, where you would have the option to easily change
the text without having to access the formula itself.

=F5/7&A1

And in A1 you could enter
<Space>Grams
today, and tomorrow you could use
<Space>g
Or ... whatever.
