Calendar Duplicates - An answer

B

BJ

For some reason for the past year or so Entourage will begin - all by
itself - to duplicate calendar entries - almost all of them. Sometimes
2 or 3 or TWENTY times EACH !!

I don't know why this happens. It just does. What I'm offering is a
way to GET RID of those dupes.

I noticed that even though an event might have a "category" set for it,
the duplicates were labled "none." Many of my events didn't have
categories so - when I should have had 1200 entries for the past four
years - I had 62,000 !

The way to take care of this is actually quite simple. Ensure that
each of the events you schedule has a category assigned to it - but not
"none." Once the calendar starts to duplicate you can go to
calendar/All Events and then sort by category. Simply go to the bottom
where you'll find all the "none" duplicates and DELETE them.

It works. I've done it for several months - three times its begun to
duplicate events.

I just wish I could figure out why it begins in the first place !!!

I hate to say this but this is probably one of the most heavily
documented problems in the forum a long with DB corruption. A
workaround for your problem has been posted numerous times. Do a
search for sync services and workaround for details. However, its as
simple as just sync'g one module at a time - probably in your case cal
and tassks. The first post of the workaround was posted at
markspace.com in March 2008 - the guys who make Missing Sync.

I kind of wish people would do a bit of a search first. There are
probably 1000's of posts on this in this forum alone. Tons at
Markspace and elsewhere.

As "heavily documented" as they may be - they are, in my case, not as
apparent as you might think. I have a good deal of experience with
Entourage and searched time and time-again regarding this problem with
little success. The "work-around" that I have documented was never
discussed. I don't have tasks so that is not an issue. We're talking
calendar entries.

Chill out. If someone offers an answer (no matter if it may have been
posted before) perhaps others haven't found that "heavily documented"
solution either.

You've discovered a fix we've offered hundreds of times. Thanks for
sharing it again.

Thanks Diane for your supportive comment although I'm not sure if you
intended that but it was. I know you've constantly answered the same
questions over and over again especially around DB corruption. In the
case of sync serv and DB corruption I would say these would be the two
most highly documented issues in the forums. You may have noticed but
I now exclusively concentrate on sync issues as I've had so many
devices etc and am very familiar with sync. You tend to concentrate on
DB corruption and even fix people's databases. However, I suspect that
you probably feel a touch frustrated when the question is of such a
nature that the person hasn't even taken a look in the forum to see if
there's an issue and an answer. Then if they come to you they're
informed and stuck and that's where you and I can add real value
rather than repeating the basics that have been hashed out time and
time again.

I've noticed that you, I, Corentin and Bill all seem to focus in on
certain areas. Corentin is more general but like Bill has more of a
speciality with Exchange. I guess my point in my response is I wish
people would just do a simple search to see if their issue has been
documented. In the case of some issues, definitely not or so little
they'd miss it. No one can miss sync serv, DB corruption and Exchange
issues.

I recall in the early days as we were grappling with the sync services
mess we had some different philosophies on how to handle it. One
difference was I decided to utilize backups extensively when a sync
mess happened and would use Time Machine. Through our discussions
though I decided that overnight backups with everything shut down was
the way to go. We've well dealt with sync services and how to avoid
sync messes like this fellow has run into e.g. the workaround which is
100%. Anyway, I think a little research is warranted first.

I think Diane answered this comment appropriately. In terms of my
needing to chill you've obviously interpreted my comment as a personal
criticism. It wasn't meant to be that at all. It was a general comment
as I am hoping all participants would do some fundamental research
first so that we are not constantly deluged with the same questions we
have been dealing with for two years and to which I have religiously
responded and have helped people for two years. All the dups and the
mess you put up with for so long and had to come up with your own fix
was so unnecessary. Once you noticed this behaviour if you had scanned
the forum you would have found your answer and saved yourself a ton of
pain. ]

I am hoping for others that this would be the case going forward.
People do not need to unnecessarily suffer with this sync mess in
Entourage and otherr packages like Contactizer Pro if they research a
problem in this or other forums especially with an issue like this
that is so heavily documented. I think it is still rated in the top 5
at Mactopia.

I might need to chill for other reasons personal to me but not for
this. This was not a personal attack but simply almost a plea for
people to do some fundamental research. I've watched for two years
people suffer extensively with sync messes and have answered their
queries I can't tell you how many times. A viable workaround which is
100% reliable was arrived at in March 2008 and yet I am still
answering questions like why do I have dups. Its because you have more
than one of Entourage's sync modules turned on at the same time. Work
with only one module turned on at a time and no sync issues with
Entourage period.

I can tell you with Contactizer Pro there is no workaround. A sync
mess there is irreversible and requires a complete uninstall and re-
install. Check out Objective Decisions forum.

I appreciate the explanation. My apologies. As with many folks, I
don't visit a group such as this unless I'm in trouble. Then, when I
sign in, I find that there are a million postings because I haven't
been monitoring it.

In my prefs for Entourage Sync, I usually have only two boxes checked.
Contacts and Events. I don't have Notes checked. Now this is to Sync
with Mobile Me. Are you saying I should do one at a time?

I hate having to go through "Address Book" and iCal but I find that
Entourage has other attributes that I prefer over either one of the
Apple apps.

Diane: Thank you also for your understanding.

Cheers,

Bruce

What is not obvious is the Mactopia forums are linked to the Microsoft
Entourage newsgroup. When you access via the newsgroup using the
Entourage newsreader you can view everything like email. You can
download older messages and use Spotlight search to find answers.

I dislike the Mactopia interface so much I refuse to use it. In the
beginning search was terrible but I've been told it has greatly improved.

Bruce yes your problem and the reason for the dups is you have two
boxes checked in Entourage sync preferences. You can only sync with
one box turned on at a time. In my case, Cal and tasks are always on.
If I make a change to my Contacts I turn of Calendar and Tasks and
turn on Addressbook to sync it. Once done, I switch back to Cal and
Tasks. This works reliably 100% and there will not be sync errors. If
in your switch you accidentally leave the two turned on, you will then
have a sync mess which you will have to recover from. It is a pain
that we cannot have all the modules turned on as we should be able to
but we can't. Microsoft has no intention of fixing this and a long
time ago it became apparent to me they didn't know how to. Objective
Decisions is more direct about the issue than Microsoft. They simply
blame it on Apple's sync services architecture as flaky, unreliable,
buggy etc. If you check out that forum the product manager Aure is
very direct in his comments regarding sync services and how it has
affected their company and the resources they've had to apply to this
problem. I tried that product to see if I could get away from
Entourage but it was way worse. A failure of sync in Contactizer Pro
requires a complete uninstall including all hidden files and a re-
install. However, in doing this you loose all your categories and
links. In essence, what you have is just a fancy iCal and Addressbook
so its just better to use iCal and Addressbook. BTW, if you don't need
the functionality of Entourage I always suggest to people to just use
iCal and Addressbook as there are rarely sync issues unlike what you
can experience with Entourage. Many people in the early days switched
to iCal and Addressbook as they couldn't take the sync problems. For
me, I need the functionality of Entourage but did try at one point to
function in iCal and Addressbook. There aren't sync issues it just
lacked the functionality I need for my work.

So, just to summarize, only have one sync module ticked at any one
time and your sync's will be 100% reliable. I've been working for at
least 6 months now without a sync error and I also sync to an iphone
and a Palm TX and nothing ever goes wrong. Not though if two modules
were turned on.

Yes Diane, I couldn't agree with you more; Mactopia is just so
pathetic. Compare it to Apple's support forums and there is just no
comparison. And this from the biggest software company. I think
Microsoft better be real careful with the next release of Office.
Google is taking over the world. Apple is in the best position they've
probably ever been in. Software developers are coming back to the
platform. There is a huge gap in Information Management and this is
well known and someone is going to be able to come up with something
that will compete with Entourage.

Basically I use Entourage but I use iWork's Pages and Keynote as I can
no longer stand Word or Powerpoint and I used them for years. Iwork is
a great product for most of what users need and it just works so much
better, faster and simply. I don't know what happened to Microsoft as
I've used their products happily since the 80s. However, this
experience with 2008 has been so disappointing. I think Steve Balmer
is at the root of a lot of Microsoft's trouble and Gates made a huge
mistake turning the company over to him. However, as I say that, in
all my years in IT people have been distrustful of Microsoft. I
however, did like their products but I sure am not a Microsoft fan
today. I think they did a good job with Windows 7 and that might be
their salvation but the Google's and Apple's of the world are moving
fast and successfully. Just look at Apple's and Google's stock
compared to Microsoft's stock over the last 10 years at least for
Apple and 5 years for Google. There's no comparison in performance
value. That speaks volumes of the markets confidence in these
companies.

So let's see what Office 2011 for the Mac brings but as you and I know
the stuff they need to do to get this product up to snuff on the Mac
is huge.
