Calendar Issue

We use MS Project 2003 Professional.

I am using a Resource Pool.

I set the Base Calendar for Resource A to Calendar Days, a calendar
created in the Resource Pool that uses all seven days of the week fro
7:00 to 12:00, 12:30 to 5:30, i.e., 10-hr workday.

If I enter Resource A as the Resource, 60 days as duration and
Starting date of 12/15/09 as set by a predecessor task, the Finish dat
shows 4/6/10 or 112 vs 60 calendar days.

If, using Task Information and the Adv Tab, I set Calendar: to Calenda
Days with either "Scheduling ignores resource calendars" checked o
unchecked, and the Start date is 12/15/09, the Finish date become
2/12/10, or 59 days which is correct.

I don't understand why, whenever I use the Base Calendar setting fo
Resource A in lieu of using the Calendar setting on the Adv Tab, MS
appears to use the project's base calendar, i.e., a Mon-Thr, 10 hrs/da
instead of Calendar Days. In both the Resource Pool's Resource Sheet an
the Project's Resource Sheet, the Base Calendar for Resource A shows a
Calendar Days.

Why is this happening or what am I doing wrong???

Thank you

Hello mehunter48,

I would double check the definition of the "Calendar days" calendar
in the Resource pool file. It sounds as though you may have two
"Calendar days" calendars -- one in the pool file and one in the
individual Project file.

If, as you note, the "Calendar days" calendar is defined as 10 hours
per day -- 7 days per week -- assigning a resource with that base
calendar should cause the tasks finish date to move earlier than a
calendar with 4 working days per week -- 10 hours per day.

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

Julie,

Thank you for the response. I am new to this forum. When I checked
few days ago it didn't appear as if anyone had replied. Actually, I ra
on to your reply by accident.

Anyway, you are correct, I do have a Calendar Days calendar in th
Resource Pool and in the Project File. I didn't think it mattered.

So, should I delete all the Calendars in Project File whenever I use
Resource Calendar?

Hi Michael,

No, it's not necessary to delete the calendars, just make sure they
match or you're likely to see the differences in scheduling that you
note. When you first create tasks in Project, the tasks will be
scheduled based upon the calendar you set in Project > Project
Information.

When you create resources, each resource automatically get a
calendar. The resource's calendar can be based upon any base
calendar in that project file and can be modified with specific
exceptions to the base calendar.

When you assign resources to tasks, the resource's calendar will
drive the schedule of that task -- including working and non-working
days as well as the actual number of working hours per day.

You can copy base calendars from Project file to Project file
through Tools > Organizer. So, perhaps the thing to do is to rename
one of the "Calendar Days" calendars in one project and copy the
"calendar days" calendar from the other file over to make sure they
match.

I hope this helps.

Julie,

I am still having trouble.

I assign Resource X to the Resource Pool.

I assign the Base Calendar for X as 24 hour.

When I assign X to a task MSP uses the Project Calendar or 10 hrs pe
day 4 days a week to derive Start/Finish dates.

If use the Advanced tab and set Calendar to 24 hour, MSP uses the 2
hour calendar.

I don't want to have to use the Advanced tab every time I want
resource to use a different calendar. I thought that was the purpose o
being able to change the Base Calendar on the Resource Sheet.

I have checked that the Project file and the Resource Pool file ar
using the same calendars.

What am I doing wrong???

Thank you

Hi mehunter48,

Okay, something is odd. You noted you are using Project Pro -- are
you using Project Server? Is your new resource an enterprise
resource or a local resource?

If you are not using server -- when you say you "assigned Resource X
to the pool" are you saying you added Resource X to the pool file
and then assigned resource X base calendar the 24hours? Does
Resource X also exist in the local (non-pool) file? When you
connect the sharer file to the pool, did you leave the option to
"Pool takes precedence" or sharer takes precedence.

The only way I can think of (outside of a corrupt project file) that
base calendar changes made to the pool file are not "sticking" is if
the sharer file is overriding the changes you are making in the pool
file.

I am also making a wild leap here that the task is question is not
fixed duration.
