Calendar item deleted when owner deletes meeting request

A delegate accepts a meeting and the meeting is posted in the owner's
calendar. Later the owner deletes the meeting request from his mailbox
without opening it. This causes the meeting to be deleted from the owner's
calendar. Is this normal or is there a way to correct this issue to allow
the owner to delete the request without deleting the calendar item? Thanks.
