Hi Allan,

Welcome to this Microsoft Project newsgroup :)

The trick with setting up calendars is to know the Project must have all the
hours in one day. So, one calendar, from 00:00 to 03:00 and 17:00 to 24:00,
etc.

FAQs, companion products and other useful Project information can be seen at
this web address: http://project.mvps.org/faqs.htm

Hope this helps - please let us know how you get on :)

not sure I understand your example. If it was for item 1, its not logical to
me. When I tried it, it would not accept 24.. I had to use 23:59.

Hello Allan,

It is likely that Mike is off-line currently, so pardon me for jumping
in.

You will need to either modify the standard calendar or create a new
calendar through Tools > Change working time.

Assuming you have two ten hour shifts per day for 7 days a week:
Select all column headings S through S and enter:

First Row
From: 12:00 AM To: 3:00 AM
Second Row
From 7:00 am To: 12:00 am

This give you the 4 hours per day that is nonworking time from 3:00 am
to 7:00 am

For the 24 hour calendar, I would just use the 24 hour calendar which
comes with Project. The working time in that calendar is defined as
12:00 am to 12:00 am.

I suggest however, that you will also need to create separate
calendars for your groups of resources. The *project* calendar could
be the 24 hour or 20 hour, but assuming your resources do not work 20
or 24 hours per day, you'll want to create the calendars for the 7:00
am to 5:00 pm staff and the 5:00 pm to 3:00 am staff. If you go with
the 12 hour per day, again you'll need one calendar for the 7:00 am to
7:00 pm staff and another calendar for the 7:00 pm to 7:00 am staff.

For guidance on creating calendars which span over midnight see the
"Night Shift" calendar which comes with Project.

I also suggest reading FAQ # 5 "Default Working Hours" at:
http://project.mvps.org/faqs.htm

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

one more question:
if I used the standard 24 hour working time and all my tasks are working
around the clock, the resource group is pipefitter working from 7am to 7pm
and from 7pm to 7am. do I just select start time in options as 7am and end
time as 7 pm and select the 24 hr calendar. I cannot select multiple
calendars. the same for the 2 -10 hr shifts. The resource would be working
from 7 am to 5 pm and from 5pm to 3 am.

Hello Allan,

If you are using the 24 hours calendar your start time and end time in
the Tools > Options, Calendar tab should be 12:00 am to 12:00 am.
Your hours per day are 24 and (assuming 7 days per week) 168 hours per
week.

As explained in the FAQ, the default start and end time is what is
assigned if you *type* a date. (You shouldn't be typing dates except
for **Actual Start** and **Actual Finish**) The number of hours per
day is what is used when you enter a task of "3 days" -- if you define
a day as 24 hours, the duration of the task will be 72 hours.

As far as resources, you most likely have different people working --
the day shift pipefitters and the night shift pipefitters. Create
separate resources on the Resource Sheet and use the "day shift
pipefitter calendar - 7 am to 7 pm for the day shift and the correct
calendar for the night shift. Do the same with the folks working the
10 hour shifts.

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.
