the "format callout" option is greyed out. How can I do
this? Thanks

Hi Bert,

The [Format Callout] button in the /Text Box\ tab
of Format=>Autoshape is only available with certain
callout types.

If you're using a 'speech baloon' type
(those in the top row of callout autoshapes)
you can get a 2nd line by using multiple callout copies.

Create your first callout, then while it's still selected
use ctrl+D to create a duplicate, move the tongue to
the location desired, set the top call out to 'no fill'
color then either manually or with both callouts selected
use the Drawing toolbar's [Draw]=>Align or distribute
(middle then center) feature to stack them then use
[Draw]=>Group to make it a single object.
