Came back to office - and I can't find my previous email in inbox and sent folders

I had to re create my account - and can't find my previous email - but my calendar, signatures are fine and still in place?

How do you lose part of your user items?

You normally don't. Perhaps you have accidentally configured Entourage to
show unread messages only; switch to your inbox and see if there is a
checkbox next to View>Unread Only. If there is, click this menu item, and
you should see all your messages again. If this does not solve the problem,
post back with more details.

Just to be sure....this is a POP account?

Exactly what caused you to recreate your account. Are you saying you entered
your email account again, or did you create a new Entourage Identity and you
are calling that an account?

Did you rebuild your database? Did you make a backup first?

Yes - POP

there was no account showing when I opened Ent. nothing in inbox, nothing in junk mail, nothing showing.

re creating account (or setting up a new one) was my effort to reach what I had in old mail and to download email from the past week - my time of absence.

I have not made a backup or rebuilt anything yet. I am looking for guidance/

But, today, I did download update to Office 08 - and installed it.

This sounds like the problem when you moved the Microsoft User Data folder
out of the Documents folder, but you indicate that you still see calendar,
signatures. What about your contacts? Are they still there?

What size is the database file in your Main (named Main by default)
Identity? If the size of the database indicates it does contain your data,
then we can decide what to do next.

Blank database size 2008 --> 22.6 MB (approx)

In the fine print for any updater, it advises you to backup before updating.
In rare cases, your data can go missing. I hope this is not the case in your
situation.

I did change the identity when I found that concept in the help docs - when I look at that new file, it is 50mg +.

when I do a search for a document named Main identity or even for a file with identity in the name - none come up (except for odd mp3 files).

is there a way to search for files greater than a certain size? the old files should be very large.

Did you mean MB?? If the size of the database is not showing the correct
size, this indicates the mail is gone. Generally though it's all or nothing.
I'm not sure exactly what is going on here. Rebuilding won't help if there
is nothing there to rebuild.

One place to check for the database is in an invisible folder "lost &
found". <http://www.entourage.mvps.org/troubleshoot/user_exp.html#user1>

Can you take a screenshot of your Main Identity selected in Column view and
then select the database file and show me the columns from Office 2008
Identities through the info on the database. Send that to me off list.

I found a file 'main identity backup' in my trash (though weird dates). It appears, from a search, that it has my recent emails in it and is about 75meg in size.

how do I access this? and incorporate it into the 'new identity'?

I tried accessing it (this file) as an identity - it doesn't show up on the list. It appears that there are two files re the new identity I set up - one in the cache files and the other in the office group identities folder - but they have different 'styles' of data. the backup file I have has a file by file listing in it vs the file in the office identities folder having a 'database' file, etc, not mentioned in the other.

Can I rebuild the database file using the info in the cache?

I can 'see' where the old files are - but I just cannot access them.

Any help?

You can't import an Identity that is same version. You have to use switch
Identity to export between the two Identities.

Drag from trash to the desktop. Rename it so it doesn't overwrite the Main
Identity folder in your Office 2008 Identities folder. Drag it into the
Office 2008 Identities folder into the Microsoft User Data folder (located
in Documents folder)

It should be a folder named Main Identity. It will contain these files:

Database
Mailing Lists
My Day.plist
Rules
Signatures

I would export from the newest Identity because it contains the smallest
amount of data. After you export, switch Identity to the older Identity and
import.

How to manually move your data. (when import fails and/or you need to move
to a new Identity same version or revert to an older version)

<http://www.entourage.mvps.org/install/manual_install.html>

The cache files are for Spotlight and cannot be imported into an Entourage
Identity.

Good luck.

Thanks

I have recovered the old email and can see the recent ones in another identity (set of folders) on that same folder list.

all is good.

thanks again to the MVPs (Diane).
