Can a .pst disk with CRC error be repaired?

S

Sylvia

Aloha,
I have my Outlook 2003 emails backed up on a disk as a .pst file. My old
hard drive crashed so now I have the new one in my laptop and desperately
need to be able to retrieve these business emails.

I cannot open the file directly from the disk. A message comes up that says
"You are attempting to open a .pst file. These files are used by the
operating system and by various programs. Editing or modifying could damage
your system. If you still want to open click Open With or click Cancel."

I tried to open with Outlook but its says that Outlook is unable to open.

I have tried to copy the .pst file to the hard drive first but then I get a
CRC message in the last 20 seconds of copying.

Any suggestions are appreciated. Thank you.
Sylvia

Try alternating Scanpst.exe with Scandisk.exe or another disk repair utility 3-4 times, if needed. That's been known to work wonders on a damaged .pst file.

Thank you for your help. Where do I find instructions on how to run a
scanpst on a CDRW? I hope to hear back from you:).

I did find how to run a scanpst.exe but it said that because it is marked
"read-only" I would only be able to scan it and not repair anything. I
cannot uncheck the "read-only" because it is on a CDRW. I cannot copy it to
the hard drive first because then the CRC message comes up in the last 15
seconds of copying.

Also, I did try and run just the scan and it wouldn't work. Any suggestions
are appreciated.

To run Scandisk (or actually checkdisk);
Start-> Run; cmd
in the Command screen type; chkdsk use the /? switch for help

Scanpst.exe can be found here;
C:\Program Files\Common Files\System\MSMAPI\<locale ID>

You cannot run this on a CDRW as the files on it are Read Only.

Thank you Roady. After reading my above exchanges do you believe that all my
so called backed up emails are lost? I have not yet tried a Scandisk. Can
that be done to a CDRW? Probably not with my luck.

No, it can't be done. Unless you can copy the file to your hard drive, you can't repair it. You may want to seek (paid) assistance from a company that specializes in data recovery. See http://www.slipstick.com/problems/scanpst.htm for some that specialize in .pst files.

Aloha David,

Thank you for your reply. Does that mean all hope is lost?

Hi Sylvia
As for the other thread then i am fairly certain that you wont be able to
run scanpst over pst file on the cd as it will need to be able to both read
and write to the file which it wont be able to do (as far as I know) Roady,
is this right ??

It probably is a hard lesson but that is why you should always check your
backups. Since it's on a CD I would try to copy the file back to a harddisk
on another system to make sure that it's not your hardware. Scandisk is not
a tool that can be used for a CD. Depending on the corruption you could try
to recover it with Isobuster if also doesn't work on another system.
