Can a timer be set up in infopath?

I'd like to set up a control in Infopath with a start and stop button (or
similar) to record elapsed time. Is this possible?

You cannot do this within InfoPath itself... but you can do this inside a task pane. The task pane has full scripting capabilities, including timers.
