Can connect with OWA but not with Entourage 2008 to Exchange 2003

We have Exchange 2003 at work.

I can connect directly to our Exchange 2003 server with Entourage 2008
over VPN.
I can connect using Safari to our OWA server (it uses form based
authentication and SSL)

I can NOT connect to our OWA server with Entourage 2008 with SSL. It
says I have the wrong username of password or security setting. What
gives?

Our office is phasing out VPN so I need to be sure I can continue to
use Entourage 2008. For Outlook on Windows they have set up an
Exchange proxy server using basic authentication which works fine on
Windows but I cannot connect with Entourage 2008.

Thanks for any help.

Hi Mattias!

I'm not familiar at all with Exchange proxy servers but I would think
you're more likely needing to focus on why your OWA connection doesn't work.

Are you sure your OWA server is Exchange 2003 and not 2007? I have seen
folks with connectivity issue with 2007 and they have been able to
connect using:

exchange.domain.com/exchange/[email protected]

Are you also making sure to test your OWA connection while *outside*
your company network? Basic and forms-based authentication should both work.

Hi Bill,

Thanks for your reply.

I have now confirmed with IT that we have not switched to Exchange
2007 and are running Exchange 2003.

I tried your URL anyway but to no avail.

I am scrambling for ideas for troubleshooting this. Below is the URL
that loads when I connect to our OWA. Can the arguments be part of the
problem?

https://exchange.domain.com/CookieAuth.dll?GetLogonWrapper?url=/exchange/&reason=0

Any help or ideas appreciated.

Hi Mattias!

I don't have access to a forms-based 2003 OWA server to be able to
conclusively confirm the syntax of your address is correct. You
definitely shouldn't be using address above in Entourage though, just
the server name possibly followed by /exchange.

From a forms-based 2007 OWA server I get this address:

<https://exchange.domain.net/owa/auth/logon.aspx?url=https://exchange.domain.net/owa&reason=0>

If you haven't already try this for your server address:
server.domain.com/exchange

Hope this helps!

Hi Bill,

Sorry, it doesn't work without or without /exchange. I get the "bad
username/password or security setting" error. Maybe IT have blocked
access in some way.

(I will see if I can get IT to look at the server logfile without
telling them I am trying to use a Mac to log in.)

Thanks for your help.

Hi Mattias!

I forgot the simplest of possibilities. If you're saving your password
then it may have become corrupt in your password keychain.

Open the Keychain Access utility found in /Applications/Utilities and
then search for your Exchange password. Delete it, launch Entourage and
re-enter your Exchange password.

Also, have you tested using a different Mac or within a different Mac OS
user account?

Hi bill I'm facing the same problem. Our company uses proxy to connect to exchange. I have a PDF instruction to setup Microsoft Outlook 2003 (on Windows). However, I've been trying to imply these instructions to entourage for 2 years now. I just didn't know where I should apply the proxy settings. I really hope you help me in this

Below are the instructions for the proxy settings
-----
• On the Exchange Proxy Settings page, under Connections Settings, do the following steps:
• Enter www2.aramco.com in Use this URL to connect to my proxy server for Exchange box.
• Select the Connect using SSL only check box.
• Select the Mutually authenticate the session when connecting with SSL check box.
• Type msstd: www2.aramco.com in the Principle name for proxy server box type.
• In Proxy authentication settings choose Basic Authentication.

Hi Majed!

I've seen instructions for using an RPC proxy server but Entourage does
not use RPC. It connects to Exchange Server 2003 via WebDAV.

If you're not going to be connecting to a back-end server then you must
connect to a front-end OWA server. That server must not use any
authentication methods other than Exchange Server's basic or forms-based
authentication.

When I connect to the address above using the Safari web browser I see
the server is using basic authentication. That's good.

Have you tried connecting via Safari? If you can connect via Safari or
most any non-IE web browser then you should be able to connect using
Entourage.

Hope this helps!

Hi Bill again,
I can connect to OWA via safari alright. Also, I have my nokia N95 configured to sync with my exchange email. Is there any way I can imply the settings on the attached PDF for entourage?

If I may have your email please so I can send you the file to look at.
