Can contacts be coded to receive different distribution lists?

Instead of having different distribution lists for different projects
(newsletters, surveys, clients, prospects, etc.), is there a way to code each
contact to ensure that they appear on specific distribution lists? We
currently have different distribution lists for each project, but there is a
lot of overlap, and these lists are so big that we have to divide them up
into groups (A - C, D - G, etc.). Keeping each list up to date has become a
nightmare! Some contacts may be on one distribution list, but not another,
while others may be on all of them.
