Can different language versions of Word 2000 coexist?

H

Herb

I have a German version of Word 2000, and for reference purposes it
would be useful if I could install it in addition to my English version
of Office 2000 (under Windows 2000).

Is it easily possible, or might it open a can of worms and should
therefore be avoided?

Thank you.

Hi Herb,

The localized language versions of MS Office 2000 use the same file
names but with different content so mixing multiple language versions
on a single Windows partition can cause some rather strange problems.

Hi Bob,

thanks for your warning.

Do I therefore take it that simply specifying a different installation
directory isn't enough, and I should basically forget about the whole idea?

Hi Herb,

Unfortunately for this scenario Office installs to Windows and Common Program File folders as well as the Office folder.

Is it the menus you need in both languages or the programming aspects or ????

Just the menu/window texts really.

I have the En-Ge Microsoft glossaries, but it would be better/easier if
I could see the actual German menus. Any offers?

Thank you.

Herb, I think what you need is the Office Multilingual User Interface
package. Here's a page of links to information about it:

I'm sorry if I got your hopes up... Pursuing the links a bit further,
I found at
http://www.microsoft.com/office/previous/xp/multilingual/muipackfaq.asp
that "Office XP with MUI Pack is available to customers through the
Open, Select, or Enterprise Agreement licensing programs." These are
available only to big companies. In other words, as a single user you
can't get a copy. :-(

Hi Jay,

thanks for the link, although it refers to Office 2003, whereas I have
Office 2000.

I found this:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...7C-4BFE-4D8D-B96E-10BB4EA36C0C&displaylang=en

But the white paper available for download on that page is a 83-page
document, and the procedure looks very involved.

I think I would need a brief summary containing instructions for dummies
for my particular purpose :)

Hi Jay,

thanks for your follow-up message - I only saw it after I had posted my
reply to your previous message.

Presumably the situation is similar for Office 2000 under Windows 2000?

I think the situation is the same. The corresponding FAQ page for
Office 2000 is
http://www.microsoft.com/office/pre....asp#MultiLanguage Packavailableasastandalone
but it doesn't mention the licensing restriction. Asking Google for
articles containing
"office 2000" mui
doesn't turn up any vendors offering it for sale.

By the way, do you know that Office 2000 is no longer fully supported?
According to
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=fh;en-us;lifeOffice it
has been on "extended support" since July 2004. The same is true for
Windows 2000 since July 2005. The extended support periods will end in
2009 and 2010, respectively. You should start thinking about your
upgrade path before then.

A colleague recently recommended MSG Browser (see
http://www.msgbrowser.com).

It isn't exactly what I had in mind, but it offers a convenient way of
searching the MS Glossaries.
