Can find " ^p " in number-bulleted text, can't replace it: why?

I've got a text distributed in number-bullets instead of normal lining (it
serves referential purposes), but I want to edit it (erase one space at the
end of a verse and another one at the beginning, but keep the same verse
distribution), and I can't manage to do it automatically, since it seems to
function differently searching ("Finding") from Replacing. Why is this? What
can I do for this function to work as it does when "Finding"?
I'm using Word 2007.

I've just now done what I believe you say you're doing, and it works
perfectly -- both ways, going from space^pspace to ^p and back again.

Since you say the Find aspect is working, I assume you don't have "Use
wildcards" checked (^p doesn't work when that option is checked).

What about experimenting to see if you can use some other replacement, just
for starters, to see if the hangup is the ^p or the replace in general?

Replacement otherwise works fine: I can, for example, substitute ^p for
(i.e.: one space) or for anything else, but there seems to be some problem
when wanting to include in my search two spaces, one from the end of one
line, and the other from the beginning of the next; something about
bullet-line frontier. In fact, when I do this change (^p for space) a
misterious small _ (smaller than normal) appears. Never had this 'problem'.
Of course, I have no wildcards on.
I'll give a miniature example of what I'm working on:

184. den-ki-ke4 duttu a Å¡ag4 mu-ni-in-ri
185. a Å¡ag4-ga Å¡u ba-Å¡i-in-ti a den-ki-ka3-kam

As you will notice, between the bullet-numbers and the text there's
automatic indentation, but also one space before each first letter. However,
differently from this, indentation is not selectable.
