Can I add a formula or function to Vlookup?

Good morning.

Being fairly new to Excel I'm running into a conundrum.

I switched from using "if" in my calculations to "vlookup"..........

using Vlookup gets me the result I need, but that's where it ends...
I'd like to further the calculations using the result but not sure how .


ex:

=vlookup(a2,legendtable,3,false)+sum(b3:b7) ---- but I get "false" in the cell.

I assume you get the 'False' result because the VLOOKUP wasn't able to find an exact match for A2, is that correct?
