can I change Word's choice of font for certain unicode characters?

If I'm typing in Times New Roman and I want to enter an IPA (phonetic)
unicode character that's missing from Times New Roman, Word goes ahead
and switches the font to Lucida Grande, which has those characters.

The problem is, I don't want Lucida Grande! I want a different font that's on
my system and also has the IPA characters in it (Doulos SIL). I can let Word
do what it wants, and then manually change the font, but this is a big
nuisance. Is there any way I can get Word to do what I want it to do --
change to my choice of font, not its own?

Thank you for your reply. Is there anything one can do at the system level
(e.g. through Terminal) to change the system's behavior so that it gives me
the font I want rather than the font *it* thinks I want?

Hi David,
Search the Word Help for the term "font substitution" and when the results
come up, look at the topic called "Specify fonts to use when converting
files". Hope this helps.

Unfortunately, this does not appear to fall under what Word calls "font
substitution". "Font substitution" appears to come into play when your
document asks for a font that you don't have -- not when you are editing
and ask for a character that the current font lacks. When I click on "font
substitution", I always just get a message telling me that I have all the
necessary fonts.
