Can I continue to work on and off line while installing SP-3

Can I work on & off-line while the SP-3 download is taking place?
Do I need to stay connected to the internet the entire time? (Phone
connection will take about 6 hours!)
What problems am I likely to have with existing programs as a result of this
download?
