I would like to be able to create and save a new fill or shadow pattern. Is
this possible? I need to be able to show variations of several drawings.
Example, a box, --next drawing the box with dots (dot pattern selected as a
fill), --next drawing a box with dots with the box lines removed, so that all
i have is the shape of the box with the dots as a fill (instead of a pattern
or color).

Thanks very much for any advice anyone can give.

Yes you can, but I think you are talking about two different things.
Basically a Visio shape has lines and a fill. They are totally independant.
A line pattern will control whether the lines are solid, dotted, dashed or
looks like links in a chain. The area enclosed by the lines can be filled
with a sold, dottted, dashed or custom pattern. The fill could look likes
bricks or any other pattern.

What you describe is standard fill patterns in various combinations with
standard line patterns.
1st - solid lines - solid fill
2nd - solid lines - dotted fill
3rd - no lines - dotted fill

There is a nice topic on Office Online that describes the creation of a
custom Fill or Line pattern.
