Can I create subfolders in IMAP accounts?

I want to organize my email in subfolders - but every time I try to create a
subfolder under inbox or other folders, I get the following message:

Cannot create folder. The folder 'Inbox' cannot creat subfolders. This is
most likely a limitation of your IMAP server. In order to create a folder
that contain subfolders, append '/' to its name as you create it.

So would this be a workaround? I tried renaming some of the folders with a
/ following their name but it still didn't work.

Have you tried logging on to your IMAP account directly on the server? (Via
webmail?)

I had, but now that you asked the question I was way more determined...

I found a setting in the user preferences Categorized Folders list: (
Category-Folder Separator) that can be checked off. When I did that, it did
put my Reference-Clients, and Reference-Whatever into folders and subfolders
but the change did not reflect in Outlook.

Then I also found something called WebDisk that lets me create directories
and file names. Again, it let me create the Directory Reference, and a
subdirectory Clients, but the changes are not reflecting in Outlook (even
though I updated the Folder list several times).

Am I on the right path here?

As a side note, I also noticed that several of the folders that are listed
as "defaults folders" in WebMail do not (and have never) reflected in
Outlook, like Saved, and Spam...

Did you then tell Outlook to subscribe to those folders and then do a
Synchronise?

Apparently your IMAP server won't allow what you're trying to do. Outlook
can only follow the methods allowed by the server.

Two thoughts, though. The first is why use subfolders? Just make a new
folder and put it at the same level as the Inbox. There's nothing magic
about where the folder is in the hierarchy. The second is if your server
has a web interface, log in with that and see if you can create subfolders
on the server side. Outlook will reflect them if it's allowed.
