Can I Format Endnote References Differently in Body and Endnote Li

I would like the endnote references in the body of a Word document to be
superscripted, but I would like the endnote references at the beginning of
each endnote in the Endnotes section to be numbers that aren't superscripts.
(This is a common style for numbers in endnotes.) But I don't see a way to
do this with standard Word endnotes because the same style "Endnote
Reference" is used both for the numbers in the body and for the numbers on
the endnotes in the Endnotes section. (Of course, the problem can be solved
by bypassing the Endnote system and using sequence numbers, but it's
substantially more time consuming to do it that way.)

Is there a way I can use the Endnote system to give superscripts in the body
for endnote reference numbers, but no superscripts on the numbers in the
Endnotes section of the document?

Thanks for your help,

But is there any way to have two columns of footnotes beneath a wide
one-column text? (This is very common in large-format books.)

No. I think you can have endnotes in two columns, but not footnotes unless
the text is in columns.
