Can I format phone numbers differently?

DL in Seattle

Just upgraded to Outlook 2003. When typing in a new phone number it wants to
put the area code in brackets. How do I turn this feature off?

There is no such "feature." That is normal behavior. Explain why you think
it needs to be defeated.
