Can I get Outlook to keep an e-mail conversation alive?

I often send e-mail that needs a response and I'd like Outlook to help
me make sure the conversation doesn't die. Ideally, I'd be able to
mark a message as needing a response by a certain time and Outlook
would pop up a Reminder if no response was received. (Implicit in that
is that if Outlook notes a response, it should suppress the reminder.)
I know I can add a Follow-up flag to a message but it seems that all
that does is turn the line red in my Sent folder. I need something
more obvious than that. It's likely I won't look at my Sent folder
very often.

One of the options in the "Follow up" context menu is "Add a
Reminder"........
