Occasionally Outlook 2002 will popup its prompt dialog asking for the
username and/or password. This isn't the problem of corrupt security
descriptors in the registry where you delete them and have them
recreated so password will again be remembered. It is not a "remember
password" problem. It looks to be a problem in how Outlook handles a
login failure. POP3 only returns 2 status codes: +OK and -ERR. If a
connection is made so Outlook gets past that point and has submitted the
username and password, a failed login (i.e., status of -ERR) is
interpreted by Outlook as incorrect username or password. That may not
be the case. For example, you can get past the connection to Hotmail
but then login fails because the service is unavailable and no login
page gets presented (i.e., there are no username and password input
fields on the page returned after the connect). I'd like to get Outlook
from interrupting my current work with popup prompt windows that are
actually bogus. It's not a problem that the username or password are
invalid. It's a problem that the login process failed. I don't want to
see those prompt windows. If I don't get e-mails for awhile then I can
check the logs to see what is happening.
Right now I have to use a separate e-mail monitor, like POP Peeper, to
tell me when there are new e-mails in my various accounts. I can't
leave Outlook open because eventually it will bitch when a login attempt
fails which occur sporatically. I'd rather leave Outlook 2002 loaded a
minimized to the system tray but the popups are too annoying. Is there
a registry key that can alter the behavior of Outlook to NOT display
this prompt window for username and password (there certainly isn't an
option within Outlook)? Is there a 3rd party plug-in that will force
Outlook to shutup and not bother displaying this windows (and just
continue the the next mail polls which will eventually connect okay)?
