Can I have more than 256 columns on my spreadsheet?

I'm very much a newbie to excel.

I'd like to setup a spreadsheet with more than 256 columns. Can this be
done? If so, how?

Only if you are willing to put the additional columns on a second
worksheet. Gets cumbersome sorting, viewing, printing. Of course
printing 256 columns on one sheet is no fun either. Why do you need so
many columns? I hardly ever get past column Z.

Consider transposing your data if possible to make use of Rows as opposed to
Columns.
