can i have outlook running in taskbar to check email

I am always connected to the internet and i was wondering if i could have either outlook 2003 or outlook express 6.0 running in the taskbar to check and see when new emails arive without having to manually open the program and check. Similar to a hotmail accout where in the taskbar it will display new incoming mail messages..
